Verify on official websiteThe transport and logistics sector has been traditionally male dominant and described as a non-traditional sector for women. Over the past five years the industry has had a 58% growth in employment yet still only 14% of workers in the industry are women, according to a Transport and Logistics Industry Skills council ( TLISC ) report titled ‘Australian Transport and Logistics Industry Forecast of Labour and Skills Requirement 2013 -2017’. The benefits of increasing the participation of women in the industry are clear. A gender-diverse workforce provides easier access to resources, broader industry knowledge, allows organisations to better serve a diverse customer base; helps attract and retain employees and provides a larger potential workforce (50% of the working population). Women are an integral part of the transport and logistics industry and have a great deal to offer organisations big and small, in multiple industry sectors and across all levels of management - but companies are missing out on a talented pool of potential staff by failing to address these gender imbalances. At SMART 2015 Conference in Melbourne this May 26–27, Peta Irving from “Women in Supply Chain” will be sharing insights into how companies can attract and retain more women in key supply chain, logistics and transport positions, and the benefits that a more even gender balance can bring in terms of efficiency, talent management, performance and opportunity.
